BOTOX?— I’m NOT sure then Let’s Talk Botox

Are you one of those persons who want the benefits of Botox but a little sceptical? Well, let’s give you a little information on cosmetic Botox that may make the decision making easier.

Cosmetic Botox, a popular injectable treatment, uses a purified form of botulinum toxin (Botox®) to temporarily reduce wrinkles and fine lines by relaxing the muscles that cause them, resulting in smoother skin.

For those who needs the science, here's a more detailed explanation:

  • What it is:
Botox is a neurotoxin, meaning it affects nerves and muscles, and it's derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which also causes botulism, but in the small doses used for cosmetic purposes, it's safe and effective.

  • How it works:
Botox works by blocking nerve signals that tell muscles to contract. When injected into specific muscles, it prevents those muscles from contracting, which in turn relaxes the skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and lines.

For you girlies who just want to know, what it treats? If it will hurt and how long it will last?

  • What it treats:
Botox is commonly used to treat:
    • Frown lines: (between the eyebrows)
    • Crow's feet: (wrinkles around the eyes)
    • Forehead lines
    • Lip lines
    • Chin and corner of mouth wrinkles
    • Neck wrinkles

  • How it's administered:
Botox is administered as an injection by a trained healthcare professional into the specific muscles that cause wrinkles. Usually the needle used is so fine that only a small prick is felt but there is also the option to use a topical anaesthetic so that the experience can be totally pain free.

  • Duration of effects:
The effects of Botox typically last for 3-6 months, but the duration can vary depending on the individual and the area treated. Are you a Gym buff or very expressive with your face? Then your Botox will likely last on the shorter end of the spectrum.

  • Common side effects
  1. Pain, swelling and bruising (short duration)
  2. Flu-like symptoms (fatigue & fever shortly after procedure)
  3. Headache, resolves in a few hours to days
  4. Eye irritation, dry eyes or drooping eyelids, if treatment done close to the eye.

These are not all side effects of Botox treatment but the most common ones. It is important to note that because side effects exist doesn’t mean that they would occur.
